This site is about Essex, what Essex has to
offer, and the publications that exist in Essex. The site name stemmed from being #1 in Google for 'Essex Pubs' (Public
Houses), rather than publications. Whereas a google search for 'Essex
Publications' appears to be largely aimed at the
University of Essex and its
brilliant departments, particularly the new
Department of Computing and
Electronic Systems. I am sure the site will overflow into London over
time, as much of Essex is closely linked by its historical and geographical
ties.
I was going to run a
nasty globe site that talks about human
pollution. I run a lot of history sites, this was different, looking to the
future and the effects that my children and their children, (and your children &
grand children) expect to enjoy - a nasty globe!
I also have an interest in
peoples rights, as I am a Christian (not that this is only Christians who
have this interest!). So, a little about rights in the
work place.
Plus, most importantly, the
Disability Discrimination Act 2005.
Here is a quick snippet on INTO, a company that is attempting to
pass themselves off as educational providers - more to follow!
Who are INTO? This appears to all be in the public domain:
Rights of work for part time contracts - the new act in 2002 enabled workers
on continuous part time contracts to apply for a full time contract. How
does this work?
If you have been employed for over four years in a part-time contract since
July 2002, and this has been renewed at least once, you are entitled to
apply for a Full Time contract - by law.
Saturday is a non-working day. Does this mean
that it is OK for workers to work Saturday as part of their normal
contracts, on an ad-hoc basis, without time off in lieu? I think NOT.
Web editors : This was
about Web Expression:
But not any longer, Web Expression is history (and absolutely rubbish), the
new tool appears to be sharepoint designer, which is probably another beta
from Microsoft, but is at least a WYSIWYG editor for web pages, and replaces
Frontpage.
But, as usual, with limited amounts of time,
the history wins again.
So, what exactly is a publication? Apparently it is the publishing in
printed form (for sale), of any research. I presume this includes books,
printed papers, and web site publishing amongst many other styles of
sharing information. I tend to prefer the latter.
There are many excellent sources of publications in Essex, my favourite
being at the Essex Record Office in Chelmsford, Essex. Here, there is a
repository of old and ancient documents, with much also available online
through their SEAX
database. If you are more interested in names and places, particularly the
Essex Pubs (and a whole host of London Pubs), you may wish to visit my
London & Essex Pubs site.
What I am hoping for, on this site, is to add some unique publications that
relate to Essex in any way, shape or form. Please let me know if you have
anything to add to the site.
