This site is about Essex, what Essex has to
offer, and the publications that exist in Essex. The site name stemmed from being #1 in Google for 'Essex Pubs' (Public
Houses), rather than publications. Whereas a google search for 'Essex
Publications' appears to be largely aimed at the
University of Essex and its
brilliant departments, particularly the new
Department of Computing and
Electronic Systems. I am sure the site will overflow into London over
time, as much of Essex is closely linked by its historical and geographical
ties.
I was going to run a
nasty globe site that talks about human
pollution. I run a lot of history sites, this was different, looking to the
future and the effects that my children and their children, (and your children &
grand children) expect to enjoy - a nasty globe!
The American Democrat nominee elections in the
United States are taking place at present, I favour Barack Obama, who is a
great guy. You need to read his book - 'The Audacity of Hope' : [ ISBN 978 1
84767 083 0 ] which is an amazing tale from the next world leader
(hopefully). Sixteen days to go, good luck Obama.
Closer to home, although based in California, is
Lunarpages, where I host all of my web sites. This is a subsidiary chat site
about the woes of the world, and my greatest asset is my site on Pubs (you
know, the dreaded places where you get a nasty wine, a nice pint of bitter,
or a glass of chemicals (lager) at a vastly inflated price. All of the pubs
in the UK, particularly noticeable in London, are being sold off to be
replaced by affordable housing, or just housing. The same goes for all of
the petrol station sites - cool.
INTO are a company who are exploiting the public
sector by using the land and resources which is available to Universities,
and offering truly unbelievable deals [you give us a successful department,
we will give you a building] to be able to build new buildings on
this land, and then lease it back to the Universities).
Rights of work for part time contracts - the new act in 2002 enabled workers
on continuous part time contracts to apply for a full time contract. How
does this work?
If you have been employed for over four years in a part-time contract since
July 2002, and this has been renewed at least once, you are entitled to
apply for a Full Time contract - by law.
Web editors : This is
about Web Expression: [this is software at it's worst,
fortunately Microcrap is giving this product away, I am led to believe; they
will be]
The next BIG downer is trying to install DB2 on
Vista: I would not bother for a few years. Mysql is free, and already it
works, whereas DB2 from IBM is a no-brainer. Simply put, the support is
crap, as is the product, It is a shame, actually, as at the University of
Essex, DB2 is treated as a serious relational database, but I would
recommend Mysql, which is free and also works properly. The other option is
Oracle, which may be worth a try. IBM is losing the plot, and their support
is about as brainless.
There are many excellent sources of publications in Essex, my favourite
being at the Essex Record Office in Chelmsford, Essex. Here, there is a
repository of old and ancient documents, with much also available online
through their SEAX
database. If you are more interested in names and places, particularly the
Essex Pubs (and a whole host of London Pubs), you may wish to visit my
London & Essex Pubs site.
What I am hoping for, on this site, is to add some unique publications that
relate to Essex in any way, shape or form. Please let me know if you have
anything to add to the site.
