Unions in the work place for Colleges and Universities

[these are notes]

Where does one start?

Well, firstly, join the Union, and get involved. The Union is made up of the members, and their input.

Where does one find information available [for free] ?

I would recommend a little reading of what is relevant.

There is lots of important [FREE] documentation available from the following sites:

acas - Acas offer a list of simple guides that are used in Union training courses, these are free to download.

hmso - at this site, everthing is freely donloadable.

unison - another Union, but lots of good resources

LOCAL Human resources / Personnel pages - this is an important source of local procedures and practices for your College / University, this should include at minimum:

Recognition agreement of the union/s

Facilities agreements with the recognised Trade Unons

Disciplinary and Grievance Procedures

Seriously, if you are threatened with redundancy / sack, what should you do?

Firstly, get a blog running, and tell the world about your employer.

Next, contact your Union for advice.

Lastly, accept that you are in education. Nobody really cares about education, any more. Contact the PM to ascertain whether education matters any longer, I believe HE is a good Scots Christian by the name of Gordon Brown, you my want to confirm this with him?

Your first question maybe along the lines of :

'If you really care about education, why are there so many 'people' [in the kindest term imaginable, could be replaced with a derogatory term ] as managers in the education system who see financial constraints as a good reason for closing down courses and making all the better staff redundant? Also, as a Labour politician, why is funding for the Open University being reduced?'

[Lots more to add -  this is new to me too]

These are pay to view sites:

You can do a bit of history research on your folks, whilst I am updating pages!
